I am makeing a mold from a man made board from freeman supply. After the mold (female) is machined to shape, what should I coat it with to get a class “A” finish? I was thinking about the brush on white surface coat from fibreglast.com. Any advice?
What type of man made board?
Rattle can clear or Lacquer will work just a good as gel coat and less thickness lost.
The board is called Renshape 460 from freeman supply.
I generally use Duratec polyester paint. After sanding from 320-1500 grit it’ll buff out to an excellent shine. You’ll need a spray gun of course. If you want to brush a finish on, Freeman make mould sealer which will sand and buff pretty well.
This is a Ren board direct cut IRL airbox mould (a different type of Ren , I believe)

We also use another Ren board (Red in colour) that will take a beautiful shine without having to paint it at all.This is a 40% Nascar model mould direct cut, no paint;

I’ve always used our primer as a final finish, of course I don’t have the tolerances that others may, but you can use just about anything as long as it’s durable for the molding process and sands and polishes well.
