mold edges

ive finally finished some molds ive been working on and have trimmed the edges back.im just wondering if i should be sealing these cut edges with resin before i try and wash the pva off and prep them up as it looks a little dry.

Depends:

It the part finished after this? Then Yes…
Is it a structure type part or cosmetic? Then Yes…

Are you going to clear coat it later? Then no…

sorry,i was refering to the edges of the mold,i havent made any parts from it yet.
like this-

It is stricly up to you.
You don’t have to seal the edges. I have done it both ways.
I have also made a return flange at the edge of mold that makes a right angle bend at the edge of the mold for a much more professional look. this also givesmuch strength to the tool.

for the flange edges i sand to a 120, then put the partall around the entire mold edge to help keep clean. it’s only a waste of time and money until you have to clean the edge of a mold that hasn’t been treated and takes an hour to cleanand 5minutes to was the edge.

this has happened a few times to us… we dont seal the edges of the flange and the gelcoat and resin sometimes is really difficult to make it let go… only if it hasnt been prepared though… when you wax your moulds make sure to thoroughly wax the edges… but if you did decide to seal then, what would be best reccomended?

once it’s waxed you’ll be ok. we’ve got molds that go 6 months without rewaxing and turn almost everyday. just bring the molds in for a tuneup every once in a while and chip off, sand off and reapply the wax and you’ve got a brand new edge.

well i sanded it down and brushed on some more resin to seal it,wax it all next week
