This is the center section of a motorcycle tail fairing. I plan on making a mold from it for CF infusion. What would be the best way to do the key hole area? It is about 1" in diameter and has a 1/2" recess. My thought would be to plug it up completely and make the mold flush, then when the part is made, drill it out and bond a piece to the back that has been made to replicated the “cup” that the keyed latch fits into. Am I wrong in my thinking, or would this infuse just fine if there was a nipple this size on the mold. Obviously, i would have to lay it up with multiple pieces. Probably put a hole in the flat piece to allow the nipple to come through, wrap the side wall of the nipple and put a small pice as a cap for the nipple. What say you guys?
I cannot really follow you completely, but a recess should infuse without problems. You do have a fiber placement issue though, but normally not too dramatic.
After infusion you can run a hole saw through (you could even mould in a centre mark, to ease centering) and glue in whatever you need on metallic parts.
