Hi All,
Hoping for a little help here. I was looking into switching from infusion to prepregs for a part I’ve been making and I was wondering whether it would be possible to mix composites intended for different curing systems with each other. I don’t have access to an autoclave, but I’m building a curing oven.
Basically, the idea would be to use Easy Composites Easy-Preg surface layer (http://www.easycomposites.co.uk/products/carbon-fibre/pre-preg/easy-preg-surface-layer.aspx) to give good surface finish, with some CA composites unidirectional prepregs as the structure of the part (it’s a load-bearing piece). Main reasons for this are that easy composites doesn’t do uni prepregs and the cost of their other prepreg fabrics is quite high compared to CA composites.
In addition, I was hoping to get some critiques on my tooling as well. Right now, I use low-temp tooling board and Duratec surfacing primer to make female clamshell molds. I was intending on using some sort of gelcoat surface, epoxy and Fiberglass mat/ woven fabrics to make molds for the higher-temp environment. Any suggestions on tooling gelcoat? Or will Duratec surfacing primer work OK?
Thanks!!
