Milled fibers

Is there such a thing as “kitty Hair” in CF? Used as a filler/strengthener in products like Bondo. Milled fiberglass is a common filler but I’m looking for CF to add to some castings for strength. Anybody?

I think i’ve seen chopped up carbon fibers sold that way. Can’t remember who had it though.

You can get milled glass fibers, but you probably already knew that.

If you run across a link or site pass it on Fastrr. I chopped up some myself tonight but I think I killed the ole’ lady’s coffee bean grinder! lol

I’m testing a piece as we speak. I’ll be ready to come out of the mold tomorrow. Nothing fancy just a test piece to see how strong it is. Fibers were a bit long, 1/2 - 3/4" long and was hard to mix. Still thinking of bootlegging some parts.

Oh man, you’re in trouble now  I’ll look for the stuff.

I know i saw it somewhere but can’t find it now that i want to. Doh.
How about sifting in some graphite powder or black dye with milled fiberglass?

1/4" Chopped graphite fibers are available from Fiberglast, but they’re not cheap at $60/lb

Also spotted them on CST available in smaller quantities:

I’ve made my own before by using my Olfa Rotary cutter on some scrap pieces of CF Fabric.

Have fun! =)

Thnx fellas

Guess a pound of milled CF would be a fair chunk of material to chop up. Thought about the graphite powder too. Might look for another way to chop up some scraps. The ole’ lady’s coffee grinder didn’t work too well. “Honey! Where’s the Blender?” :stuck_out_tongue:

The mixed up fibers & goo looks like somethin’ the long hair’d black cat horked up! I’ll pull it off the mold tonight and take a pic. Just wanted to see how strong it could be. I need to build a flange to mate a CF tube to my rudder. It’ll be tricky!

I didn’t vacuum this piece, just layed a piece of bagging film over it with a sheet of lexan and a 50 lb battery. The side with the bagging film is nice and shiny but full of creases. The side that was on the tooling surface is perfect with the mat finish of the malamine.

It’s heavy, way too much resin in it I think. I built a mold with glazing putty to try to contain it, that’s why the weird shape, so it’s thicker than it would probably be if vacuum bagged.

It is incredibly strong. I can’t bend it very much. When held up to the light there are some semi-transparent areas where it’s all resin and no kitty hair!

I think I’d have to do some work on the formula to get it right before I ever cast any real parts. I have handles and a few flanges to make.

Oh well this is what happens when the ole’ girl works 3-11 and leaves me unsupervised! Well that and I spent 'nuther $100 on boat parts off of e-Bay last night too!

Fibreglast is probably where i saw it at also. I only have like 8 places i look for supplies and that’s one of them. I checked all the other places i frequent and they didn’t have it.

Yep! All my scrap carbon goes into a cup to be used as filler in molds or for bonding glue.

HAAHAA. I did that by chopping up some Uni-dir. prepreg I had laying around. I also took strips, balled it up real big, vac.bagged and then cooked it. Chopped it in half later.

They are preeeeetty.
