MGS Epoxies

Does anyone have experience with MGS 285? is it a suitable resin for infusion?

I’ve used lots of it. It’s a little slow (viscosity 400 cps) for infusion if the parts are big. For large epoxy jobs I like to use Pro-set 117LV (around 250 cps)…which seems to have been discontinued and replaced with 114.

If you can get it try Momentive MGS Epikote RIM235 with 234 and237 hardener, or RIM135 (L135i) with hardener 1355 or 1366. The latter is a system that is used for turbine blades in the USA.

I use RIM 235 with 233 and 235 hardener and it works well. If I remember right, also RIM235 is used for turbine blades

Are you guys referring to wind turbines?

Thanks guys,

My capabilites as fat as post cure are heat lamps at the moment or room temp (I have ambitionse on building an oven though to achieve at least a 60C cure)

Wyo, I watched a few of your vimeo vids, good stuff! Thanks. my concern with the 114 is that the spec is just preliminary and the cure schedule is not mentioned.

Herman thanks, I will consider those too

In Europe, yes, but in the USA I believe only the 135 series are used.

yes. Most wind turbine blades are glass/epoxy. Some are polyester (smaller blades, and LM in Denmark is using polyester)

Carbon is seldomly used, and if used, mainly for smaller structures, like tip axles.

If there is a Tg available on the preliminary sheets, then basicly ramp with 10-20 degrees C / hour to Tg minus 10 degrees C. (so a Tg of 80 degrees C makes a final oven temperature of 70 degrees C). Keep it there for 18 hours or more.

This will be a good starting point.

When using heat lamps I would not worry at all. Control is so low/poor, it does not really matter anyhow.

my oven is made with L corner for shelf

metal sheet inside, and outside insulating panel (in italy know like “stiferite”)

with a 1kw resistance of a domestic oven, I reach about 120°C, with a fan to circulate the air. Oven is 120x50x50 cm. A cheap solution but it works. (My oven isn’t well insulated, I think it can reach 150/160°C)

Gurit Prime20 ULV is a very good epoxy infusion resin. 150cp’s

Hi HOJO, Ya I did come across that one too! It looks really good but from what I remember people on here saying is that it’s impossible for the little guy to get a couple gallons.

I am looking at the tech sheet, do you know if you can let it RT cure (or elevated Rt~35C ) an then demold and post cure? Or should the PC be within the mold?

I"m in the hunt for a resin thin enough for infusion, with a Tg of around 80C+ that can be achieved with RT or minimal PC of 50-80C ideally. I don’t have an oven but I imagine I could easily build one that can reach 50-80C. My other concern is that I need only ~2gallons and I’m located in Canada… Any suggestions?

Yes you can RT demould after 24 hours, however you might get some print to form. If you wait an extra day or apply heat it is much better. after 7 days the properties are even better. Its always best to post cure but for non critical parts you can get away from it with no problems with this system.

Your right, you cant buy 1-2 gallons, but you can buy it by the pail (5 gallons). Price is reasonable.

5 gallons! I might just have to make a lot more stuff…

Could you direct me to a retailer?

Another side question, say you do not PC immediately, can you achieve the same properties with a PC 1 week, 2 weeks, or a month later?

You can contact Gurit in RI, they can help you. You can do low temp post cure of 122F for 16hrs with the ULV. Thats pretty easy to do and doesnt require special tooling. Yes, you can post cure at anytime.

Hojo, do you know of a suitable in mold “epoxy gel coat” that I could place and then lay in the reinforcement once tacky and then infuse over with the prime20 ulv?

I found sp110, ampreg26 and ampreg21 as possibilities, I’m just not sure if they would tie in with the infusion resin and co-cure.

I also saw the CR3400 but it sounds more like a softer surface that is easy to sand…

CCP makes a gel coat use with epoxy resin and infusion, its called Imedge ECT120.

Also, I have purchased 1 gallon cans of Gurit’s Prime 20LV from Composites One.
