MGS 285 epoxy resin ?

Hi newbie here. I want to make some flat carbon fiber panels using VIP. I found some low viscosity resin at Aircraft Spruce. Does anyone know if this MGS 285 epoxy resin is any good for VIP?

Thanks

Do you have CPS (viscosity) and gel time specs?

This is all I found on the web site for specs.

     System 285 (Max. Tg 105 C - 110 C)

Mixing ratio Pot life Mixed Viscosity 300-500 cp
100:50 by volume H285-F 40 min
100:40 by weight H287-S 4 hours
H285 : H287
40 : 60 2 hours

I want to find someone local to buy from to keep shipping cost’s down. What do you recommend?

Thanks

I use an epoxy called Larit L-285, which seams to have the same specs as yours. It is made for wet layup and room temp cure and is too thick for infusion.

Cheers

Aircraft Spruce is in Corona, not far from you.
That resin seems like it will work just fine. Generally a viscosity of 500 cps or lower is desired, so this fits the bill. Depending on the complexity and size of the parts being made, go for a longer pot life than you think. Once the process is working well, see if it can be done with a shorter pot life.

TET beat me to stating Aircraft Spruce…he is doing a great job while I’m taking care of some personal business!

TET & Werksberg, with all your knowledge what resin would you recommend for VIP with the lowest viscosity and someone local? I am making flat carbon fiber panels 2’x 4’. Werksberg, TET is doing a great job.

Thanks

Thanks for the input  I will keep that in mind when I do wet layup.

Well, you could contact RevChem in Bloomington as they make deliveries everywhere in So. Calif… (800)281-4975 or TET can tell you what the best VIP resin from RevChem too…

From RevChem we use their long gel vinylester with slow MEKP. Gives about half hour to infuse, and viscosity is about 450cps.
I much prefer epoxy though, and generally specify 2712 from PTM-W with a hardener to give the desired pot life. Range is from 40-175 minutes and about 350cps at room temp, which works great even when infusing something the size of a bus. We did that!

A Bus:eek: now that is big. So RevChem has this 2712 from PTM-W resin? Does RevChem carry other composite products for VIP?

Thanks

I work with MGS L285, its perfect resin but not so much for resin infusion. Infusion is possible but I would recoment MGS RIM 235 resin which is specialy formulated for resin infusion. Its viscosity is about 200cps at room temperature.

I doubt RevChem carries PTM-W stuff. They prefer to push their own products, some of which aren’t the best for the application. PTM-W ships out, and they’re located in Santa Fe Springs.
Airtech is a better source for vacuum bagging (which includes infusion) supplies. They’ve got everything, even rebranded PTM-W epoxy! Located in Ontario.

I like the low viscosity and the room temp part. Now I need to find a local composite store that has every thing I need.

Thanks

Does Air-tech have a store in Ontario because that would be great they are 45 minutes from me. What is the name of the re branded PTM-W?

Their infusion and toolfusion resins are from PTM-W, but surely more expensive. Call Airtech HQ and pick up at the huge Ontario distribution center.

Great info I am going to call both place’s to see ho is the cheapest.

Thanks

Has anyone used this store called Composite-One?
I have noticed that some stores don’t do small orders. This makes it hard for a small timer like me. I need a store that does small orders. Any help with this would be great!

Thanks
