Material for mould flange Please

Hi, my name is Natan. I’m from spain and work as a carbon fiber machiner for koenigsegg parts.

I wanted to ask what material you use to create the mold flange. I am manufacturing a fiberglass mold and I do not know what material to use that is flexible and suits well. I have seen that you use aluminum tape but what else?

Thank you very much. This is the piece I want to make.

I find plastic coreflute (aka fluted signboard, plastic signboard, etc) the best material. It’s self-releasing, quick and easy to cut, and you can fold it to virtually any shape by just cutting through one side of each flute on the back so that when placed against your pattern you still have the solid skin face up.

Otherwise polypropylene is also self-releasing and can be heated up to give it a bit of shape. It gives a better surface finish than coreflute, but requires more time and effort to cut.

I’ve also used MDF, aluminium sheet, etc, but they are a real chore to work with and require a release agent. They also aren’t very good for making temporary barriers to create a split mould (like the wing you are trying to produce would require).

Hi Natan

Forget the flange:p:D :D. You should know that if your working for koenigsegg :D:D:D

Wow. What part do you build ? Talk about a dream job  Way cool mate
Do they have a parts factory in Spain ??

+1 to suggestions above… I would also add PETG plastic , used in various thicknesses

Thank you very much. I think I’ll use corflute. How thick do you recommend me?

Yes I work laminated on molds already created but my main job is to cut and finish the carbon and repair.

Here are photos of my work.

What is PETG plastic ?

Are you Making the part in one ? The part shown is four separate parts joined together
How and from what you are going to make the part from will determine how you make your mould and for me that determines what I will be using
So what are your plans ?

Google … PETG is used for a million things.

Why wouldn’t you make the mold flange out of fiberglass on a fiberglass mold?

If you mean the material used to separate the part for split molds, you can use a ton of different materials. What is different about this piece that is causing the issue?

I use plasticine, playing cards, epoxy putty, aluminum plate, leftover silicone slabs, play doh, plywood and anything else I have on hand that I think might work for the specific part.

Sometimes I don’t use a flange in my molds and design them so that one mold half fits over the over with an overlapping border which often gives me more precise alignment.
