Male mold top layer finish

So I made one of these guards for a buddy’s 2 stroke. It’s a custom pipe so he can’t buy one. Anyway since its a one off I used the pipe as the mold. It’s all good to go except how would I go about getting the top layer nice? I’m bagging it and it turned out great so far. I was thinking of small strips of Mylar ect. Ideas? Thanks guys aloha

Oh and don’t really have time to clear coat ect.

Stretch PVA film over it. (without wrinkles)

About not having the time:

There’s never time to do it right, there’s always time to do it over…

Herman your absolutely right. Would a 2 part poly clear be ok? Or I was even reading about minwax poly clear. Or is this a half ass way to go?

stay away from the minwax. use a 2 part clear if you can afford to go that route. Most of them have to be sprayed on with a hvlp gun. There is a 2 part out there that is in a rattle can. you puncture a tube in the bottom of the can, shake it up, then spray. That runs about $22 a can.

Also make certain the resin you are using can withstand the heat from the exhaust… so no polyester resin for sure… even vinylester may fail being it’s going over an exhaust pipe. I did one for a harley davidson out of vinylester and the guy reported back that the part failed.

Well it turned out ok. Ill sleep good tonight considering it was my first try. And I learned some things. #1. Use real clear and not hardware crap. Lol I know you told me so. #2. Make sure your top layer has a thick resin coat.

nice job husqvarna!
