Making mirror/opposite molds

Hi guys, was just wondering if there is a certain technique or something a rather in the industry that allows you to create a composite item in a mirror state? I have got a bumper air duct which is a perfect fit to my car but problem is its only on the left hand side and I want to make one for the right hand side. Is this possible? and if so how would I achieve this?

Thanks

The only way to get an acurate answer is to post a picture of the part your talking about.

Im doubting its perfectly symetrical. But if it is then the answer is yes.

Im not too sure what you mean with that but heres a link to the item I want to make an opposite mold of

no easy way unless you have a cnc mill… you either have to buy the other side as well or start fabricating one.

Yeah thats the thing that sucks, I dont have a cnc mill to make the mold nor do they sell the other side :frowning:

No easy fix? :frowning:

Th eonly wauy to do it is to make it, You acn try to sculpt one out of foam, or tape up some cardboard. a combination of MDF and foam is probably the easiest way to make a buck to pull a preliminary mold from, then sand fill and shape the part make a new mold, sand fill shape, repeat

not that I can help,. but…why put it on the opposite side anyways? Same car I assume?

The company that made them originally only made it for one side to use as an intake duct, however with the new honda engines the intake sits on the other side so if u do an engine conversion it is best to have it on the other side.

That and some people want to use them as brake ducts instead.

Uh…

why not just make your own that match one another?

Seem alot easier to me.

Other than that, I wouldnt think it should be so hard to do. Alot of measuring and some contour gauges and what not and you should be able to almost clone the thing.

If I make my own it wont match it since this one was bought and not made by myself.

I’ll have a crack at making a mold of this one first then try the other one and see how it goes from there

It would greatly help to see what you are typing about for us to assit you better.

Any way to reproduce another one and flip it overfor the other side?

Or to make a spare one, cut it into sections to get a skelition ribs for reversing it?

Thistler is in Australia and some others on here are near you too…if you want to farm the work out.

this is always a subject that i was interested in as well…i’m making a widebody kit for my project car and if i sculpt one fender outta foam and use fiberglass how would i flip it over for the otherside of the car?!

You dont flip it.

I wouldnt.

Id make a blank that fit and fashion a carving tool and contour the whole bumper.

The problem with most bumpers it that they have complex or compound curves with are not easy to duplicate.

You can do it with countour gauges and the like as I use them when I do bodywork on motorcycle gas tanks and I want them to be fixed right.

It just takes a looooooooong time.

Id rather have a big plug of foam and just shape the contour gauge and run the whole thing.

the make measurements and start punching holes in stuff where you need them

ah, sounds like a good plan then!
