Layup on top of cured layup

Hi,

I have made a moulding using infused polyester resin. Now the moulding is formed I want to add another few layers of fibreglass to the back of the moulding by hand and fill later with some peanut butter style resin mix.

The front of the moulding is gel coated, the rear of the moulding has a nice keyed surface ready to take more layers too which is good.

I am unfamiliar as to the preparation to achieve this and wondered if anyone has any tips to achieve the best results. I have seen post where people wipe MEKP on the cured surface however I am not sure if that really is necessary.

This may seem obvious to some sorry but I am unsure on the best procedure to achieve the best results and any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks very much.

I think you’ve misunderstood. You use MEK to wipe the surface NOT MEKP (methyl ethyl ketone without the peroxide).

you can just use acetone. If your surface is keyed then that’s all you need to do, give it a quick wipe with acetone to clean it.

Sorry, I am aware of the differences between the two and the ‘P’ just found it’s way in the term. I read nasty stuff about MEK and glad it’s not necessary to use it

Thank you for your reply.

It happens :stuck_out_tongue: just so long as you’re aware. MEK is volatile stuff, very nasty.
