Hi Guys, im new to this. is there a method/layup or formula to work out what would be required, Glass,carbon etc to make a particular strength lay up?

The formulas for calculating the forces/vectors are the same as any other material. Here are some general stats that you can use for material strengths and stiffness. If I remember correctly these are for Vf (fiber volume fraction) 50% for woven and Vf 60% for UD.
The strength properties of composites are a bit more difficult to quantify and to make things worse there is no materials database of composites, simply because there are so combinations of materials.
In general though, as wyowindworks mentioned there are some rules of thumb. Fiber strength and volume fraction matter A LOT. After that just put the fibers in the direction you want your composite to be strong.
