Latest Infusion

This is a 02-03 Yamaha R1 mid fairing that is being infused as i type this  It’s a triangular shaped female mold part. Infusing with ReInfusion 8604 epoxy.

I didn’t get the flow medium placed perfectly… I should have taken more time to get it arranged perfectly. I also used green stretchlon bag film because i ran out of the other type i use. Problem with using this film is it can get leaks if the bag material get’s poked from anything inside the mold. This happened twice on me so far… no big deal as it was on the vacuum end of the bag… if this happens on the resin end of the bag… the part is junked.

There was a fellow on here who wanted to make his own 02-03 R1 mid fairings… PM me if your interested in buying the molded parts. All you would have to do is trim and clear coat them. It’s easy for me because i have high quality molds already made.

I think the resin kicked enough that air won’t get into the laminate but dang… that green stretchlon is terrible for infusing with.

Here is the photo…

How does the 8604 leave the mold surface for you? What is your mold surface made of and what’s your release agent?

I’m using 8604 on a tooling polyester surface with frekote 770nc release and tested a bit with wax. The 8604 seems to react to the mold surface. It removed the release agent after popping out and left the mold needing wetsanding, and reapplication of release agent.

I use frp epoxy molds so there is no gel coat on the molds. I just wax them 10 times when the mold is brand new. After each pull i clean the mold, then wax it 2 times. No resin left behind… and if there is it comes right off with a wooden popsicle stick real easy.

I want to try Frekote… but for now I just use Meguiars mold wax.

I would think as long as your mold surface is smooth and glossy, it is just the 8604 reacting with the epoxy. Did you apply the Frekote following the directions on the data sheet? Also there is a frekote cleaner that you are supposed to use before ever appling the release frekote.

i followed the instructions on all the materials and used the entire frekote system and also tested wax. every time the mold surface and part gets an etched effect.

so do your parts come out glossy?
