Lamborghini Gallardo overlay

I’m all happy with excitement about overlaying a Gallardo interior. No… sorry i don’t have the actual car here, just the parts…about 10 of them.

The guy wants black 2x2 twill so it should be fun.

I am finishing a red kevlar-carbon overlay for another customer… that stuff is more difficult to work with on overlays. The kevlar is “slippery” compared to the carbon so the tows get out of alignment easily. I have 7 days to complete the job.

here are the before pics of Gallardo parts.

Sweet!
…and it’s spelled Gallardo

^^^ Yep! haha ^^^

The resins have to Gell…

whahey good luck! hope you wont have to buy any new plastic parts from the dealer!! you might have to get a loan!

You’re not kidding Aga… parts aren’t cheap.

Werksberg… haha

My neighbors drive me crazy… “it smells… he stinks blah blah blah” Wait till i open a can of woop-azz… oh i mean a can of PER.

I can’t wait to get a shop.

the second can be remedied…take a bath! :stuck_out_tongue:

seriously, i ve switched to exclusively epoxies because of that. and a couple of times that i gotta spray polyester gelcoat, i spray them and cover the molds at once with a sheet of plastic, but it still stinks allright.

I’ll post up pics in a few days when i am finished

The parts are 50% completed now.

…are you going to layup on this parts? WOW. Careful, you must not make any mistakes. :frowning:

From the looks of the pictures…those inherit draft angles should be a home run to overlay.
Should make for some beautiful parts when cleared.

Are you flattening the clear or going full gloss ??

They will be full gloss clear.

I had a couple minor problems one on a radius and another on a corner… nothing that can’t be fixed.

I’m aiming for this Thursday to be done.

I have decided not to buy more of this particular brand of epoxy clear resin again. It takes 8 hours to get past B-stage. Other than that it seems to be a very good resin system, with great UV resistance and clarity. I just don’t like waiting 6-10 hours to apply more coats.

I’m going to switch resin to Kleer Kote from CompositeEnvisions starting with the next job i do.

yeah, the small amount of resin used in overlaying plays a part in the long curing times too…

Cool work. Any updated pics up yet?

Also, you mentioned having a long stage-b curing time taking 8 hours. Mind sharing what brand that is that you are currently using as a heads up?

When doing automotive parts, with high temps inside the cabin, engine, etc… would it be best to use epoxy or polyester resin? It is to my understanding that polyester melts plastic.

CompositesEnvisions has a product specifically made for wetting out carbon fiber, which is polyester resin. And there other products mention that epoxy is not a good resin to laminate carbon fiber, fiberglass, kevlar since it won’t wet out properly. Can you chime in on this?

And I read conflicting reports mentioning that polyester is not UV resistant, will yellow faster than epoxy, and will warp with heat. (LINK HERE: OPP Racing) They also mention that epoxy is 100% UV resistant- BUT I seen many members here mention polyester resins over epoxy. Is this company BSing…or just bending the truth?

I am not certain of the brand name of epoxy i am using currently. A local supply biz sells it and it is table top epoxy. Most table top epoxies have some uv resistance.

I am not going to use polyester for any overlay work. It is too brittle and could potentially crack the bond between plastic part and the overlay. Polyester resin can yellow over time but how much yellowing? It is hard to say. Surfboard polyester resin is clear but it does contain styrene wax. Wax is not good for overlays so inbetween coats of resin you would need to use acetone and then dishsoap/water to remove all the wax. The wax always rises to the surface. I simply do not trust any polyester resins for overlay work, but I know some people do use them for overlay.

Engine parts for overlay… that is a tricky thing because you have to test the part after the overlay is complete to make sure heat does not seperate the overlay from the part. Engines can put out over 220F degrees. Test your underhood parts before selling them or you may end up having someone angry if it seperates.

have a look at ResinServices HTR212 resin with surface coat clear hardener. Ask the rep if it will do what you need.

lambo parts will be done in one or two days…been super hot here so i got a little slow.

OPP …i don’t take all that they say to be the final word on resins. polyester can yellow, but maybe surfboard clear polyester resin won’t yellow if you clear coat it with a uv resistant clear coat? experiement and see. No epoxy is 100% uv resitant… just can’t be made that way. This is why clearcoating is necessary with uv clear coat paint.

Any pics yet?.Cant wait to see this.

Yep, I just finished 10 of the 11 pieces today. Pics are on my laptop at home. I’ll upload them tonight.

For those who are wanting an overlay resin… I talked to CompositeEnvisions about their clear table top epoxy. It can be recoated every 4 to 8 hours with additional coats. It is super clear. It will stand up to 140F degrees for prolonged periods of time ( inside a hot car on a summer day). I probably would not use it under the hood of a car due to high heat. It’s priced right too… about $140 for 4 gallon kit, or $45 for a one gallon kit.

I have been waiting to see the result. You do some pretty good work. That is a really good deal on some epoxy resin. I was and still am using Max CLR epoxy and it is about 100 bucks for a gallon and a half kit.

Photos, and thank you for the compliment:) Best pics my cheap camera can take …

There are about 6 parts not shown but if you scroll thru the photobucket album you will see much of the overlay work.

Max clear is probably very good stuff, but that is too pricey. Probably because salt water does not degrade it.

max does marine stuff.
