Knob shifter

Hello:

I am attemtin to do some layups on some automotive parts. So far so god, but the only issue I have, there is a knob shifter that I would like to cover with some CF twill, something similar to this http://www.amazon.com/Leather-Short-Shift-Speed-Illuminated/dp/B00805Y70G/ref=sr_1_44?ie=UTF8&qid=1348575320&sr=8-44&keywords=knob+shifter, I tried to do it with a single piece of cf, but I get horrible wrinkles :(:(:frowning: on the lower area of it. Is there somebody that already attempt to do this kind of layup? I wonder if I would need to do several cuts on the cf lay in order to layup properly.

Thanks!

Antonio

If your going with the insert on the top for the shift pattern, then I’d recommend using biaxial carbon sleeving. Here is a shot of one I’ve done using the sleeving, http://roguese7ens.com/photos/displayimage.php?album=search&cat=0&pid=475#top_display_media. Another method I’ve used if you’re not using the insert on the top is to use the sleeving for the body and then cap the top with another small piece, more like this:

Without using a sleeve/tube like Rouge mentioned, you will have to template out a piece of fabric and wrap it around, with a seam. You can airbrush the seam, do a paint line like Rouge, or cut it perfectly and lay it up perfectly and have a simple cut line showing. The top will always be an issue, since it is a major compound curve.
Test patterns out with everyday cloth, and then transfer the best template out to the CF.

I would just make the seams in the same location that shifter in your link had them.
