Key to the secret in the mold??

Made me a mold from polyester of a motorcycle fender (simple one-piece mold)
All the polyester copys are fine (first layer of gelcoat, then the polyester). They do need a bit of sanding before I paint them though.

Ok, now for the carbon part:

After the waxing (same as I use for polyester), the first epoxy went into the mold. After total 3 layers of carbon, the peelply and breather went on + vacuum.
The day after I got it out of the mold. It released easy, there were only a few minor (for this first project then  ) problems on the toplayer.

One of the problems was the missing of a shiny surface. At least, the part that came out of the mold wasn’t that shiny. A piece of carbon+resin that needed to be cut away was nice and shiny. This part was direct between the vacuum bag, no mold, peelply or breather where on it. This little leftover piece was not only shiny, but also a lot stronger, the surface was realy hard. The object that was in the mold wasn’t that hard at all.

The question, is this a problem with the mold or something els?
Could there be not enough epoxy due to the vacuum? (because it’s not so hard)

the surface of your mold will be cast onto every part you make - so your part isnt shiny probably because your mold isnt perfectly shiny either, the bit of carbon caught between vacuum bagging material is shiny because vacuum material is non porous (spelling?) and smooth.

How do you mean your part is not ‘hard’ is it fully cured? does it sound hard when you tap it with say a screw driver handle?
I had a test part the other day that wasnt ‘hard’ like i thought it should be so i just post-cured it (60degrees for 10 or so hours) and its much tougher now.

epoxy takes 7 days to fully cure. I use a slow curing epoxy hardener that has a pot life of 30 minutes at 77F degrees. Since i have this long pot life i usually spend 4 minutes just stiring the epoxy so it is thuroughly mixed. Also with epoxy there is little to no leaway on resin to hardener ratio… you must get it very close to exact.

Can i see a photo of your mold?

is there a surface coat / or gelcoat in the mold first?
If there is and you have gloss issues then your mold isn’t polished enough likeknackers mentioned earlier.
