Kayak

High everyone, i’m interested in building my very own freestyle kayak.
This will have to be in carbon, kevlar.
I dont know much about anything right now, so all help and tips are welcome.
First thing i need to do is build two moulds to get the top and bottom part of the kayak wich i can then stitch together.
I’m considering to use foam blocks to build these because i have to start from scratch with the designs, and i’m probably gonna have to make a couple of em before i have the right one.
Any tips on material and how too’s are welcome.
Also the thickness of the layers and how many layers necessary is still unknown to me.What kind of products ? From what i’ve seen so far pe kayaks is about 4 to 5 mm’s thick and the carbon ones about 6 to 7 mm’s thick.
Thanks in advance and till later.

There are lots of books on exactly this thing- Amazon and the library are your friend.

Google is also your friend and also this forum. There are even movies on youtube about this subject. Are you from the dutch speaking part of Belgium ?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbBNyT_a_JM

says they use 10 sq meters of carbon fabric
160oz weight
That CF is just for outside of hull

the middle looks like it is actually fiberglass? probably to save $$$$.

Kind of disappointing!

Thanks for the replies.
Yes , i’m from the dutch speakin part of Belgium.
I allready looked at a lot of youtube movies and read a lot on this forum. But i never saw anything specific about freestyle kayaks.
Only the sea kayaks, that’s why i was asking around.
Gonna study google some more now so 'till later.

Do you already have a freestyle kayak ?
If you need any help you can send me a pm in dutch.

Is there a reason that you want to build one rather than purchase one? You could just get the Jackson and be done. You won’t start saving any money over buying one until you pull 3 or 4 from the mold. Probably a good idea to design the hull to work with an existing manufacturers outfitting.

If you don’t quit have the designed figured out you could utilize the lost foam method. Shape the hull out of foam, cover it with packing tape, wax it up, cover it with composites, then hack the foam out after cure. You can use more glass and less carbon until you get a design figured out that suits you. Once you find out where you want the volume of the hull you can then pull a mold.

I allready have a fluid dope. It just seemed like something fun to do. A couple of things changed at work, and now we work all our hours in four days,so i have a three day weekend every week. And i thought this might be a great way to spend my time.
I know. I can buy the jackson carbon rockstar for about 1700 euro/ 2000 dollar, but it was more like hm maybe i should try this myself.

Prob’a kevlar/vectran layer, so there are no accidental damage punctures allowing water to get in. The kevlar/vectran (and hell, glass for that matter) will aid in getting a rid of some of CF’s brittleness.
