Just a simple overlay this time

I thought about this one for a while before deciding to do an overlay. The part sitting on top is from my mold and the main part being the overlay. The fixing points etc just didn`t warrant making the mold and i had a spare centre console lying around.

For those who are interested. I roughed up the part with 80 grit then crosshatch scored it with a blade, coated part with surfboard resin (without wax)let it tac up, draped 4 x 4 carbon over whole part, folded underneath and held here with 77 tac. (ill put a coat of resin here last)Applied 3 coats of surfboard resin and 1 of Duratec to cure the surfboard resin. Sand with 80 grit and a block (be very careful here)just taking off some of the high points. 3 more coats resin and 1 of Duratec, sanded once again 80 grit and block. Now its flat so a quick go over with 240 W or D wet, clean it up and degrease. Now sprayed 3 coats Bondaseal Clear (polyurethane) rubbed down with 400 W or D, 3 more coats Bondaseal and 6 hours later rubbed down with 1200 W or D then 1500. Buffed up with G3 then T cut. Coat of polish done. All told probably about 4 or 5 hours actual work over 3 days.

one more pic, so difficult to photograph this stuff.

Compared to other overlays you really can tell that you put a lot of work into that. Looks great.

That looks amazing…

I am trying to do the same with my car…Will the surfbaord resin stick to the stock plastic trim?

I made a sample and it came out okay once I sanded and buffed it.
But i noticed tiny bubbles in the resin…

How did you make yours bubble free?

Cheers,
Roy

No, but if you drill lots of small (1/8") holes any resin will drip thru and make a rivet on attachment along with the resin attachment too.

Look on the back of the part for “PE” or “PP” then you can use PER. BUT if it is “PS”, then Epoxy resin only! Otherwise PER will melt it like Acetone in a “PS” foam cup!

the parts i did were wood so silmar worked fie,oe part was plastic and it didnt stick very well so i ended up using epoxy as the base to stick the carbon to and then silmar for the overlay, worked fine.
