Is this an application for Veil?

I have a part that was laid up on a form in reverse order (bottom layer first). The top layer of reinforcement is 6oz carbon fiber. Because of the wet lay-up the top layer is rough as the epoxy resin has slightly pooled in the low areas and swelled material in the high areas. I would like to give it a clear/smooth surface finish without adding a lot of clear gelcoat.

Is using a surface veil to get a more consistent clear surface finish an appropriate application here? or give me enough build up to sand the surface smooth and apply a light gel coat (50/50 gel coat and Duratec clear additive). I do not have much experience with surface veil.

are you talking about the backside of the part? if your resin is pooling, you are using too much. use a small teflon roller, or even your fingers (with gloves of course), to push out excess resin. veil is often used on the back of parts (i know i use it) for a more pleasing appearance. and of course , veil cannot be used with epoxy resins…

not quite sure on that

I don’t remember now where I read it, but it did say that although most people have always thought that veil cannot be used with epoxy, it actually can

I’ve used it with no problem

Epoxy resins should NOT be use with fg mat material as the epoxy will not break down the mat binders like PER does.

Veil should be no problems with that thinness.
