Infusion Resin List

So I thought people might find this beneficial. I remember looking for resins myself and it taking a long time (as you might notice I have an extensive list). It might be beneficial to share our experiences with various resins we may have used in one convenient location. note, not all of these may be available in all countries or in small batches…

Please also post where you have purchased from.

Please feel free to add to the list.

All listed below are EPOXY

I haven’t used it yet but I have Rhino 1401-21 resin and Rhino 4101-21 hardener.

I have resin 1401-14 and hardener 4101-21 at the moment and have used it in the past. My stuff is expired at this point though.

Epoxy:
Momentive 04908
Momentive 235
Sicomin SR1710 and 8100
Huntsman Araldite 1564 (and many others)

Vinylester:
VE370SC from Polynt (very good material, I must say)

Polyester:
Too many to mention (Ortho, DCPD, ISO, ISO-NPG)

MC Technics / Brands Structural Products (Belgium / Netherlands)

Epoxy Ampreg 26 with slow hardener can also be used for infuson.

For easy reference it would be handy to indicate the type of resin epoxy/vinlyester/poly etc

Most look to be epoxy.

I use momentive RIM 235 for infusion, small pieces like a dashboard or door panels.
Someone knows a fast resin, to be used for RTMLight, with a fast cure inmold?
I know that prepreg resin have a cure time of about 2 hours at 130 °C, and after that they have a high Tg, like 130°C. There are resin for injection with similar properties? An high Tg and a fast time of cure inmold? (with heated mold)

check out this.

depending on how hot you can get your molds you could cure it quickly.

This might be a bit better http://www.resoltech.com/IMG/pdf/DS-HTG160_V2.pdf

This has 150C Tg but again higher temps needed to reduce the cure time http://www.resoltech.com/IMG/pdf/DS-_1040-1405.pdf

Cool. What do you think of it? I only choose this ond because it has a tg of about 190 with post curing.

It’s decent for infusion, could be thinner though, I used slow with larger laminates and mixed hardeners for smaller ones. It produced a nice cosmetic laminate in my hands, I never PC any of them for lack of oven.

You would like to look into anhydride curing agents. Momentive RIM145 jumps in my mind, but there are others.

But amine cured epoxy can also work, Sicomin and Huntsman have systems that should work. Huntsman should be available in the USA.

Rhino Linings

-Several systems suitable for infusion listed on their site, but if you call them they have others that are not listed like the following

  • 1411-4111, Tg=180F, Visc=200-250cP mixed minimal PC required increasing with increasing amount of slow hardener used

Let’s keep this thread going since it’s good information for everyone.

I’ve used the rhino with med hardener a decent amount now.

Pros
-Price is reasonable
-Almost clear “I’d compare it to west system clearness”
-Has a higher TG than some at min post curing but does need to still need to be post cured
-Doesn’t smell to bad, again comparing to west system it’s on the same level in my opinion

Cons
-Very sensitive to heat. Infusing at 65 degrees vs 75 degrees makes a HUGE difference
-Extremely annoying to degas. Maybe this is just my own experience but I use quart containers to degas my resins/epoxys. I have to do it in small batches of 100g and when that boils I add more and toggle the switch. If I don’t do this for a good 10minutes of toggling then the epoxy either won’t degas or it will overflow.

Over all a good infusion epoxy, but I may be looking for something that degasses easier if it’s possible and less expensive, but this stuff is around $100 so it’s not bad at all.

Does anyone know a website where I can purchase a small amount 50oz-100oz of any of the resins listed on this topic?

I am currently using US Composites 635 Resin, because they are the only company I can find that ships small amounts (without having to order a whole gallon).

Agree with regarding the degassing. I find agitation while it’s in the chamber is helpful. The bubbles seem to be resistant to popping and need to coalesce to form bigger ones to finally pop…

What about adding a vibrator to the degassing chamber? I have a concrete vibrator that could work

I’ve been doing some research because I’m considering switching to another resin system for infusion. I’ve collected quite a few TDSs and have attached them below.

I can compile these into a better thread if the mods will agree to sticky it, if not I don’t want to go through the work of doing so (and even if they do think it’s a good idea I might become too lazy to do it anyways :D)

All of these are epoxy systems. They generally have RT viscosities of less than 300cps

TDSs included in this post:

[Brand] [Resin System Name] [(Country of Origin)]
Adtech EL-360 (USA)
Huntsman Araldite 8601 (USA)
Huntsman Araldite 8604 (USA)
Proset INF-114 (USA)
Resoltech 1040 (France)
Resoltech 1080S (France)
Resoltech 1080 (France)
Rhino 1401 (USA)

I may be wrong on the country of origin for some of them. Listed solely because it’s difficult to get some systems if you’re on the wrong side of the pond.

Cont…

Rhino 1411 (USA)
Sicomin SR1710 (France)
Sicomin SR8100 (France)

If you can recommend some more systems I’ll try and find the TDSs for them (or better yet, post em up if you have them) and edit these posts to include them so they’re all in one place.
