Infused a Part last night

I will take pics soon, but i really wasnt happy with epoxy resin i used. Its from ptm and W and i saw somewhere on the forum that they used it and it came out nice. The amber color is still to dark to do carbon parts. So im still on the hunt to find a good clear epoxy resin. =\

but hey, i havnt checked the outcome just yet, so lets see what comes out. i also placed a nice amount of epoxy onto a clear plastic top to see what it looks like when fully cured.

pop it out now,10 hours or so should be fine if its only a test piece.

most of my resins are pretty dark. As long as you don’t have bridiging then you should be fine

Even with carbon?

yeah, watch my infusion video and you can see how dark my resin I was using was

Thats funny, I was actually meaning to ask you about your resins, it was pretty dark. What type is that you used?

that particular resin was just a RTM poly blend. Nothing too special. Most of my epoxies I use dry clear. You can go on ebay and find a good epoxy that dries 100% clear.

Is this the outfit you were thinking of: Polymerproducts on Ebay ?

is this the one you are using?

but
Viscosity
800 – 1,200 cPs @ 25ºC Mixed

isnt that a bit high? whats the max cps u can use?
also, whos tested this product?

have you took it out of the mold yet?!?!

noooO! lol its hurting!! i wanna do it, but no where near the mold yet.

Yeah. That is a bit high. Seeing as how water is 1 cps.

Most resins that are true infusion resins come in the 200 cps or lower range (and have a low styrene/solvent content).

MAS epoxy’s low viscosity resin comes in at 600 cps. It has no VOC’s, like styrene (which can/will create gas).

Well a couple of things.

  1. part has not fully dried.
  2. when applied heat, it dried faster, BUT now its stuck

i had 2 coats of wax in it. then sprayed a clear coat UV spray can. 2 coats of it. let it dry for 1 day (was waiting for materials to arrive)
then i infused.

there are a lot of huge airbubbles, most likely due to bridging. =|.

scratching my head on how the heck im going to get this part out. trying to look for my camera

If this is a new mold and especially if your new to the black art you should wax more than 2 times and for safety use a release agent untill the mold has been broken in, i.e gone through a few heat cycles. Have you released the edges of the part the waste section if so try and use a wide solid blade something like a chisel, slide it under the waste sections and use something as a pivot point and it may pop out, you may have some repairs to do to the mold but it should come out.

Baz

i would have waxed 10 times on a new mold.

You used a rattle can clear coat as your gelcoat?

10 times wow, on my wet layups i just do 2-3 coats of wax. pops right out.

well poped it out this morning. kinda upset, the epoxy is wayyyy to brittle when dry. i dont like that. my other epoxy i use for layups i can bend at almost 90 degrees and it wont start cracking. there were a lot of corners where (i guess) the bag didnt get into and the fiber wasnt pushed in enough =(
there was a small dry spot where there was not enough resin, which i believe was right under the resin line!

i think im going to pull the resin line back a bit, onto the edge of the flange instead of the part and see what happens. im also going to wax 10 times, and a release agent. whats the best way to push the bag/fiber into realllllyyyy small tight places??

__|
| <— something like that tight. i used 2 9oz twill, and 2 3.4 oz plain.

we need pics man, pics of the problems and pic of your mold/layup with lines.

I found the camera this morning. i will take pics when i get in. i really do think its b/c the bag wasnt big enough, and the line for the resin was in the way for the bag to get into the corners.
