Infuse Foam?

Question here please-
Can foam core be infused?
this is a sample of a fiberglass wet layup.

I would like to know if it can be done or would the core suck up the resin or not wet out the mold side of the part

thanks
tom

Use a perforated foam. This helps to even out flow rate up and below the resin.

PVC foam is closed cell. It will not suck up resin. You do need some resin to fill the surface, though, but that is the same with hand laminate.

Scoring the foam on the bottom will help flow. You want the flow on the botton to be just a little faster then on top. Pressing chicken wire into the foam can help. I do not like the grooved foam, as that goes TOO fast, and adds a lot of weight.

Instead of foam, you could also look into Cork (CorkCore) or Soric (Lantor). Especially for thin sheets.

Core-Cell USED to have thin sheets for low prices, but I understood that was the past, and now they ask top dollar for thin sheets.

This part is CSM. What fiber do you plan to use?

Usually when I’m infusing and I need to add in a layer of foam core I"ll use, “Divinycell H80” I get the I use the 3/16ths inch thick version I believe? That or 1/8th inch. Its scored and made form PVC. Works very well :).

P.S The foam can be found here.

thanks for to info!
I’m going to look at the Soric, the core needs to be thin
Im looking to find (in CA) 1/4-1/8 thick minimum

the customer does not have a spec’d out ply schedule just fiberglass and light weight (Vinyl Ester)
