incredible... gives off blue light

Today as I was peeling away some peel ply I saw what looked to be some blueish light along the points where the peel ply was coming away form the composite at first I didn’t think anythign of it thinking that it was just the faint color of the peel ply that I was seeing. But then I turned out the lights and peeled the peel ply and low and behold it was actually giving off light as I was peeling away the peel ply. It look svery cool! and was a total surprise. So I took some test samples that were lying around that I had made using the same resin and started bending them and cracking them, they too gave off a light show. I tried to capture it on my camera with a video and with my web camera but it wouldn’t pick it up. the resin this happened with is the jgreer 300/21, I’m not sure if this happens with other resins but when I get a chance to find out I will be looking fo it.

Just thoguth I’d pass on a bit of interesting anomolistic observation.

anyone ever pbserve such a thing? it looks very neat!

I’ve heard of band-aid wrappers giving off light when you open the paper envelop (for lack of better words)
But nope, enver heard of composite resins doing that…never wanted to play with it in the dark :stuck_out_tongue:

are you sure its not static electricity? Carbon is highly conductive and will build up a negative charge. This time of the year you will notice it more since the air is dryer. I worked for a boat manufacturer before. we made 55 ft hulls made from carbon fiber and the molds too were made from carbon fiber, when we released the hull by peeling from one end it would produce a high static charge and give you one mean shock that felt like getting punched in the back of the head

positive, it gives off a distinctive blue light right where you are seperating the peel ply all along as you are pulling, it also happens when I cracked the cured sheets, some parts were glass, and others carbon, and did it on them all.

All I can say is try it if you have any of the j greer resin

Yep does exactly the same with the PRF resin i use, an iridescent blue.

Baz

Like no one telling you to ground yourself before using a cotton rag to apply frekot on a large aluminum mold.

and then walking past the mold, and then thinking you just died a little bit.

OH the memories. bastards.

I also stopped taking the 4x6’ quartz panels off the molds for the same reason.

ha, it got to the point where you would be scared you would get shocked randomly that you would slam your fist to the mold real quick to get it over with. just peeling the backing of prepreg could be a painful event too if your were the poor sucker in the middle doing the peeling. and cant forget the wonderful belly shocks

20_RC51_00… what did i tell you about doing LSD while doing composite work:D

I just held some c/f parts made with 300/21 jgreer resin under the light, then turned the lights completely off so it was pitch black dark… no blue light.

yep… stay away from the shrooms man lol.

HAAHAA!!! I thought I was the only one who would smack my hand into something, figuring I KNOW it’ll hurt, but at least it won’t be a shock-pain!
Static is one of my pet-peeves. Luckily I know how to avoid getting shocked getting out of my car.

what can I say…lol

what you have to do is peel the peel ply off in the dark…then see what happens… then take another hit…j/k

haha, thats funny. it got to the point that I became so paranoid that I would get shocked anything I would touch at work I would slam my hand down in habbit. It was always a funny joke to have the new guy get the shock or to touch the mold and someones neck to shock them. haha

Yup, true that!
