In mold coating with Frekote treated mold

I just started using Frekote and this stuff is beyond amazing. I have only done some vacuum bagging prototypes with it to test the molds, but I would like to start coating the surface with an in mold coating before creating the part.

One thing I have noticed is that the resin instantly forms beads on the mold surface, like a freshly waxed paint job.

My question is, has anyone sprayed a 2K or Duratec top coat with success (as in not beading up in areas)? Has anyone found an in mold coating that can be applied with a brush? I would prefer to apply with a brush as demonstrated in one of the video by German Advanced Composites. I really do not want to use my spray gun when laying some small parts.

Just looking for anyone with experience with this so I can avoid making some mistakes.

Thanks,

I have used Frekote NC700 in combination with the German Advanced IMC and brushed it. It works, not perfect but it works.

Hi DDC, what release would you recommend which works well with GA IMC

HG R5 from HP Textiles. Should also be available in the States through German Advanced Composites.

Frekote makes quite a few different products. What are you using.

What was the problem you faced? Was it surface tension or brush related?

I use Duratec Topcoat with Frekote 700NC all the time, works great. I haven’t tried it by brush, but it’s very easy to spray. You need
to spray the first coat as a dust coat and let it flash for 2-5 minutes. I actually prefer to let it go off completely, so I wait 10-15 minutes before spraying another slightly heavier dust coat, let that one flash, then start spraying your full wet coats.

You probably will notice it fisheye for the first few layers but don’t panic, as you build thickness these will fill in. And the odd dimple here or there won’t be visible on the final product anyway.
