If you wonder why carbon is getting more expensive......

…this has something to do with it!!

Test pieces researching composite parts for the big airlines. These parts are up to 6 inches thick, 4 foot long and pretty heavy!! (Pictures aren’t the best, they’re off a phone)

two more…

looks pretty knarly

Looks like landing gear parts wired up for destructive testing. I saw that done in a lab once on a load sensing cell for a Liebherr crane. The new high tech cells can tell a crane computer the weight of a load down to 10’s of grams. The old cells were lucky to get within 100’s of kilos.

Hahahahahahah… and I’m having trouble making a side cover for my bike  Perspective eh… ain’t it great

Cool looking stuff! Dosnt look bagged though. Pressed maybe?

Although the carbon those guys are using makes the stuff we get look like hand-me-downs.

ya well rather than deal with a bunch of ricers that think anything that is not twill is not cf, they deal with people that realize the potential…

The link hanging in the press on the two pictures in the second post is maybe 40-50mm thick where its been thinned down in the middle and the section is probably no more than 200mm wide but this link will be taken up to 2.5MN (250 Tonne) in tension and compression!!

I tried to work out how they’d been made the other day and they look as if they aren’t layed down as sheets, it looks as if the carbon strands (5mm+ wide)are woven together not just front/back and left/right but they go up/down through the thickness of the part as well so there no layers to seperate under load. Theres one hollow link (not in the pics above) where you can actually see where the ends of some strands have been bound to the ends of other strands with a yellow thread.

3Tex baby!
