I want RED!

i’ve used red hybrid carbon-kevlar a few times and everytime the red turns burgundy or very dark red once wetted out with resin… WTF?! My customers want RED.

Will painting the oem plastic part to be overlaid red help or fix that problem? or does anyone know of a brand of hybrid cloth that does not change color once wetted out or at least turns red once wetted out?

Thanks guys, i’m just a bit frustrated with this.

What kind of resin are you using?

This is an overlay… so it could be a couple things:

1- the OEM part, that I assume to be dark, is showing through. Then, painting with red or white or grey (primer) should help

2- the fabric is changing color with the resin, in which I would try a different color fabric (spec a lighter color) or use a different resin.

You might call Soller Composites and ask them (if you haven’t already). They dye fabrics in-house, and can color match. I imagine they’d have some insight.

I talked to John at Soler Composites yesterday… he said the only option is buying red hybrid glass-carbon. The problem with that material is it is too stiff to work with for the overlay work i’m doing. I talked to my customer about it and he sais he’s ok with dark red. I’ll be painting the plastic pieces bright red before overlaying them.

I have also seen light blue hybrid on a car once… it looked great… just wonder how he achieved the light blue.

this is the redest I have found.

this was before we put the molding strip in. The fabric almost looks orange in dry form but turns red when infused.

I got it off ebay almost a year ago. I will try and find the seller

Maybe spray white behind the part to brighten up the red. Silver may be even better, it may reflect more of the desired light to the red instead of highlighting any transparencey that can happen with the black carbon.

that red looks somewhat brighter than what i’m using.

Can’t find any clearer pics than this, but I used West System Epoxy, topcoated with a Dupont auto finish. The fabric didn’t really darken. Every time I’ve used a polyester, it has changed the color of the kevlar. Silmar 249 didn’t do so bad, but it’s SLOW moving in the infusion process.

Danny, that is awesome… looks like Christmas red. Nice:cool:

249 is System 3 epoxy or is it polyester surfboard resin or? I’m confined to using epoxies only. The UV clear paint i use as a topcoat is crystal clear.

Silmar 249 is polyester. I think it might be what they use as surfboard resin. Not sure.

silmar 249 is the surfboard resin. it needs a surface wax also.

Thanks DannyH. I am unable to use polyester at this time due to the odoriffic smell. Sooo what I did do was buy an epoxy that has more clarity than what I’m using now. The new epoxy hardener only has a very very slight amber color to it. I’ll test it later as I need to use up the older opened containers first.

I had the same problem with red, so I`m using orange to finaly have red
