how would you overlay this?

i have a set of door handles off of a cavalier that i want to overlay with carbon then remove the overlay and install the overlay on the handles that are already on the car. i have tried a couple methods and cant get anything to work because of the rounded cornors. i think my next step would be to try and start with a layer of fiberglass to get the initial shape then pull the fiberglass off then overlay that with carbon fiber. does this sound correct?

Easy problem

Take your set of door handles you want overlaid. Scuff them up with 40 grit sandpaper to rough up the entire surface to be overlaid. Get some epoxy resin… clear resin.

Tint the resin black with epoxy dye so no color shows thru the weave of the cf cloth. Brush that onto your door handles, let it get super sticky tacky… not too wet or the black dye will seep through the cf and end up turning the cf black in spots.

Now layer down your carbon fiber cloth, cut the piece at least 1" bigger than the entire door handle all the way around. Now cover the carbon fiber with plastic kitchen wrap or a black plastic trash bag ( cut it up ). Now get your vacuum cleaner out with the hose attached. Use a plastic garbage bag, put your parts inside making sure the cf doesn’t get shifted on the part… pretty easy. Vacuum the door handles for 2 hours at 75F degrees. Any colder than that you may have to let the vacuum run for hours longer.

Once that layer of cf has cured onto the door handles ( wait 24 hrs ). Apply coats of clear epoxy. Use a micro butane torch ( 3 inches away ) move it around evenly to “pop” the air bubbles. or use a heat gun to do the same. Apply just one layer every hour or so. You have to let each layer get tacky before appling the next. This time will vary based on temperature and type of epoxy you use. Every epoxy has a different cure time.

tip: don’t buy medium or fast hardeners when buying this overlay epoxy. Those are amber colored and it shows up in the final product.

Also try going on YouTube and look up “Carbon Mods, carbon fiber wrap”. But don’t think it will be as easy as he makes it look or sound.
Be patient, take your time and you should have some good results.
