Hey guys, I need help in installing flanges on mould to use it with infusion process, so basiclly my question is: what do you use to make flanges on your moulds ?:confused2:
Usually the flange is molded as part of the mold when it’s first created. Are you needing to add a flange to an existing flange-less mold?

Hello,
Had to do this for a couple of my moulds after deciding to go infusion.
I just epoxied a 6mm plywood, plenty thick enough but you can go thicker. I used planks to create a box frame for it to sit on so all is sturdy. Gave it a nice gloss coat too, make sure there are no air leaks and the plywood is nicely cut.
Hey guys thx for replies (HeyBen & bajapatient thx for media), Im asking for flanges made on plug. What materials do you use to make flanges on plugs for infusion process?
For instance i have front hugger of motorcycle, how you attach flanges on such parts and what material you use for flanges ?
But if you use such stuff it means your model - hugger will be useless cause you wont be able to get rid of this epoxy , right ?
There is a product called “release agent”: maybe it could help…
Oh you mean flanging the plug, no problem. I would probably go about it with some modelling board, its got a corrugated core for rigidity but can be bent to shape. That attached with some strong tape and the seams closed with modelling clay or filleting wax.
cheers
Hot glue works well for attaching it.
Yes thanks for mentioning that I forgot, not sure how easy to remove from the plug if it is to be re-used.
If you haven’t been there already, go to http://freemansupply.com/ and on their front page they have a video library. Some very helpful vids that aren’t necessarily for layups, but help with releasing, molding, etc. Sign up for their newsletter to access the restricted videos. I learned a lot from there.
So you mean this axson paste can be realesed using for instance pva like any other laminates ?
Yes, it’s epoxy based. once you don’t need it anymore, just crack it away.
Just remember to use a semi permanent release, PVA will not work, because it is a thick paste and it would destroy the PVA film during the application, plus, it will not allow the cured past to adhere enough on the part.
I know that for autoclave molds, it’s used also panels of wood, because flanges must be resistant. A company told me so, but I don’t seen this wood flange
SO what can be used to release this epoxy paste ? meguiars wax is ok ? Btw this paste can be used to build form by covering plug and then demoulding ?
Wax is ok on porous materials. I also use wax on the cured paste as a release agent.
Yes, this paste is good to take shapes from plugs. For good results, use an epoxy gel coat first.
SO basiclly this paste is nothing more than laminating paste, when gelcoat is tacky then i cover it with axson the same like in hand laminating with fiberglass
Yes, BUT, it’s applied by pushing it onto the plug by hand and it’s not structural.
If you want to make a mould out of a paste you have to use Axson Epopast 400.
