Guys Im working on a dash and I used masking tape
To outline my shape. Used the tape to cut along then tried to carefully remove. Well the tape suck so hard it ruined my carbon. How can I hold the weave so it doesn’t shift or anything?
common and effective way is to spray adhesive a very thin light layer of fiberglass or carbon together, then cut and place the material in to the mould.
Edit: sounds like maybe youre overlaying. In that case; you can apply a very thin light layer of epoxy the part, let it take, very carefully lay it down so it sticks. Apply resin
Ya I’m trying to hold it from shifting while I get it in the mold.
usually spray adhesive, or flash tape on the flange is used.
Never thought about the flash tape. I may try the spray tac too.
Thanks
leave the tape on, once you have epoxied the fabric down , paint some epoxy onto the masking tape and the glue will soften and the masking tape will peel right off
you might need to leave it for a few minutes to saturate the masking tape
I also will spray adhesive the fabric and then place fep on it to keep the fibers from distorting. This may or may not be feasible depending on the mold shape.
It I’m infusing will I have any problems with the epoxy that is currently there?
aaah thats gonna be a problem … its gonna make a sticky mess trying to get the bag etc layed up
what i have also done…
when i put my template down onto the fabric, i then draw around the template with something just to indent the fibers so i can see where i need to cut, i then place the masking tape so that only a few mm are on the the side i am cutting that i wish to keep.
i then place the template back onto the fabric that has the masking tape in place, i then use a pencil and trace the shape onto the masking tape. this holds the fibers great ! sometimes i even leave the masking tape in place if its not going to be seen
i do this on hybrid fabrics especially
Another option is to use Airtech Airhold instead of masking tape. It is a pressure sensitive double sided tape intended to replace spray adhesives for internal layers, so it is designed to stay within the laminate and so you won’t have any issues using it to hold the fabric together and then leaving any of it in the laminate.
