How many yards?

Does anyone have a rough estimate on how many yards of fabric I would need for a dash kit for a friends car? Basicly it would be for the part that goes around the gauge cluster, the vent pieces, and the radio trim. I would probably do a few layers of fiberglass below, and then 1-2 layers of CF. Any help is appreciated.

The whole dash or just parts of it?

Just parts, the trim of it basicly, radio trim, vent trim, gauge cluster trim, etc.

I’d say no more than 5 yards. And that’s a very very conservative estimation. I’d be very surprised if you use more than 5.

did you say the cutting fee is like 20 bucks?

$20? I don’t know. But most places charge something crazy like $50. But if you can get $20 then that’s not so bad.

oh damn, well better make it worth while and order a lot then :frowning:

where? from carb?

Yeah, I havent called back to ask yet. I dont want to be pressured into an order when Im flat broke :frowning:

Well as far as the other online place I told you about. They’ll have them in stock again on the 19th.

Sounds good, I’ll talk to Andrew about pulling some cash together. What type of glass should I get?

plain woven glass should be fine. Something light so it’s easier to work with but don’t go too light. 1-2 oz is just about too light

ok. I have some 6oz fiberglass cloth. Is that a different type of glass then what I will be using for a base layer or a mold?

no, those are fine. but for the mold, make sure you have at least 2 coats of resin first before adding any fabric on it. Adding the fabric too early will cause the pattern to show through and ruin your mold

How would you do the dash kit Evan?

Im thinking clean, sand, clean, epoxy, epoxy, glass, epoxy,(maybe one more layer glass), CF, epoxy, and if the cf weave seperates one more layer.

Is that over kill?

Wait, you’re just wrapping the dash correct?

I’d do clean, sand, clean, epoxy, light sand, clean, epoxy, glass, cf, epoxy and epoxy again if you can still see through to the dash. A cheaper alternative would be getting some black pigment and mix it into your epoxy for anything that’s under the cf layer.

Sounds good  I think this may possible be the longest thread on the site?

lol isn’t that sad

nah nothing sad, lots of useful information in the thread

Thanks Allan. I think that place is stocked up again.
