How many layers for a aesthetic part?

Im interested in making some parts for my car and motorcycle, but as with most project budget is an issue. I am planning on using a PER or VER for the lay up, no vacuum bagging, what i was wondering is how many layers would i need i was hoping to have a useable part with one layer of 3k 2x2 twill 5.7oz CF and a few layers of E-glass woven or csm afterwards. Of course i want a rigid piece that wont flex and bend but i do not think i need a full carbon piece…yet.

So how many layers will i need?

Depends on the weight of the fabric. You need at least two layers of carbon fiber though to hide the holes in the weave, or you could go the really cheap route and dye the backing fiberglass black.

or use black resin after the first layer is cured.

What’s the part? If it is an overlay type a single layer of carbon can do, just paint the back black so you cannot see through it. If it needs structure you should have a min of 3 layers of fabric.

You wouldn’t want it blowing off the car…

Yeah, depends on what you want. 2 layers for just a simple bolt on cover is fine. 3-5 layers for something that has to hold itself up (chainguard, hugger) 5+ for more structured parts that can NOT move/Flex (front fender, rear sections, heelguards, etc)
