How hard???

How difficult would it be for me to make a mold and reproduce this spoiler??? How would I go about making it since it is currently “solid” plastic??? This spoiler is no longer produced and I have someone willing to loan it to me to make a one off or possibly a few replicas…

Thanks for the input… Another piece of information would be that this would be my first “real” attempt at making something out of composites as I have never gotten around to the other things I had in mind.

Ben

It looks like it would take at lest 2x mold halves to make and to be able to remove the finish part.

But you would have a bunch of rejects as trying to get resin and reinforcement down in that little area (top of the wing) would be a Bitc-! Unless you added more material, before making the molds, to the backside for more room to lay that area.

If this would be your first composite mold / part…take it from a teacher of this stuff…start with a simple shape, one mold part to save you money and state of mind too!

I typically make these things using a clam shell mold or simply a two piece mold. Depending on whether weight is an issue, I use either a foam or liquid plastic core to fuse the two pieces together and finish the seam with black tinted resin. A final clear coat completes the project.

That is the main part that I was worried about, the “tip” of the wing. With this maybe being my first real composite attempt I am worried that starting with this one I might fail miserably… I just wish more people were closer and I could maybe go in for a “tutoring” session on this spoiler or at least get some good hands-on tips and help. Might see if Advantage is up for it (located in Decatur, IN).

Yes, I’m glad you took it the right way. Do something easy to learn and progress from there…

With you in Indy land, there should be other composite shops in your area. Try offering free part time labor for a small shop to exchange for the lessons?

odd i am building a spoiler similar to yours ben! here are the picks of it as of to day note the divits in the flang!! these guys are corect very hard to build but i will help

That’s actually kinda ironic… lol… I will give you a call here in the next few days and see if we cant work out a good time to try this.
