How do I make this....

Hello everyone. I am new to the forum and it seems like a lot of useful info is on here.

I am looking to make a part similar to the one in the picture but I have only done flat/slightly curved stuff so far. How has this been done or more to the point how should I do it. The weave looks incredibly straight and I very much doubt I can get it this straight using cloth and vacuum method, any ideas? i.e do it in sections, can I only get it that good with pre peg…

Thanks

without holding the piece it is impossible to be sure but it looks like a multi piece assembly, it looks like the square tube is one piece, the bottom and top seperately glued on. It also looks like there are inserts in the large hoes in the top.

So make the square tube as one piece then laminate the top and bottom parts on?

I don’t know how strong it has to be but it looks like they made all 3 pieces seperatly then epoxied them together.

I agree with Bricklin on without holding it…

It looks to me like it could have been a metal mold (like injection molding) and was compressed and autoclaved or at lest oven cured Pre-preg…

Cheers for the info guys.

I was looking at how should I go about building a similar part really. I think I will make the box part first and leave some 90deg flanges on the part that will be laminated onto the oval shaped part. I will make the oval part (but flat instaed of stepped for ease), laminate the box onto it and cut out the hole afterwards. The base of the box will be the easy bit.

Its always good to hear other peoples take on things as it gets the old brain ticking.

That’s the reason for this forum…
