How do I build in a big enough flange/rim around the edge of my mold?

I made a quick mold of my chain guard off my bike, just to see what the complications might be…

My question is how do I get a big enough flange/rim around the edge of my mold so that whan I use it for infusion there will be some place for overlap carbon and the sealant tape to go???

Could I just use some model clay around the outside and lay the glass over this region?

What do you folks do?

a small part like that you could just tube bag the whole mold and infuse it. no reason to go threw all the trouble of adding a flange for something like that

Playing cards and aluminum tape, my friend…I lay the cards the long way, so that gives me almost 3 inches of flange, and I use popsicle sticks to reinforce the back of the flange.

hot glue and roofing sheet metal work well too. make sure you make some big ass flanges…saves a ton of trouble. P.S. what bike ar you making a guard for?

Thanks guys, these ideas sound cheaper then modelling clay!

It’s for a 00 RC51, but it’s only a test run, I’m not really interested in making anything for my bike, but for friends instead. There aren’t very many small accent pieces that you can make for the RC51, (none actually as I think about it), but there are a ton of smaller plastic bits for the gixxers and kawis…

I used wall liner, or whatever it’s called. It’s a rubber strip that is glued to the wall where the floor and the wall meet. It was a dollar for 6ft strip at Home Depot. Or use the garage door liner which is the same thing.

so how about for a unusual shape such as this chain guard, any ideas? There are many curves and edges…

any suggestions?

if any of you have any pics of your playing card, roofing sheet metal, alum foil in action can you post pics? thanks.

have you seen my undertail tutorial?

No I dont think I have, where can I find it?
