george, if you mean as for in the mold work my suggestion which works for me is to lay the carbon in the mold to the point you are going to have to join it then just before laying the last few centimetres spray a little 77 glue on the carbon, wait a few seconds and the cut. I guarantee it will not fray nor will you get any stray fibres falling in and ruining the part.
This works very well for me but i`m sure others will have different suggestions. Some people say the 77 glue shows in the final part but i have yet to see it.
One more point there is no need to cut both pieces of carbon, just the one then overlap the other piece, dont try and get a butt joint there is no need the vacuum will take care of making it look like a butt joint i.e no ridge.
