High temp mold construction

Hello all,

I am making a mold for a intake, I want to cure it at 105 c. I was thinking about infusing the mold and using lantor soric in between the carbon layers to help wet out the carbon and add thickness and rigidity. The soric is good for 170 c but my greatest concern is that after many runs at 105 c there will be more shrinkage and warping. does anyone have any experience with this? Are core materials a bad idea for high temp molds?

Core materials work in high temperature moulds. I have used Soric in a 150C° mould and it works well. You should make your mould only from carbon fibre without glass, glass could cause problems. You also have to choose a symmetric layup and a resin which TG is about 20° higher than the curing temperature.

Awesome, good to know. I will be using OptiPLUS tooling resin from CCP. It has a Tg of 174 C, and I was thinking of doing an unsupported post cure so I don’t cook my vinylester and bondo plug. Any recommendation on how thick with the mold should be?
