High temp epoxy resin??

I am looking for a higher temp epoxy resin. I need to be able to cure it at room temp, and would like a service temp of 500 F.

Anybody know of a resin, and an online source to purchase it?

Hysol 9396 fits the bill perfect, but I have not been able to find it local or online.

Can anybody help??

Thanks a bunch!

Coach,

Are you looking for a laminating resin or an adhesive? I ask because Hysol 9396 is an adhesive. You can read about the MDF here: http://www.loctiteaero.com/Images/Datasheet_PDF/Hysol%20EA%209396.pdf

If you still want to buy it I’ll locate a local supplier for you.

Evan,

I am looking for a resin, to lay up CF. I am making CF pipe guards and silencers for 2 stoke motorcycles.

I know of a guy who used the Hysol 9396 to lay up CF to make the same stuff I am.

What is the difference between the two? I open for options.

Do you have a source on the Hysol?

Thanks,
Coach

Normally the resin matrix that’s formulated as an adhesive has a higher viscosity making it not really suitable for laminating. If you also read the document above, Hysol does not recommend using the 9396 for structural applications. Normally when you try to laminate with an adhesive resin, what you end up with is a very brittle structure. The resin will cure and your graphite will take shape of the mold. However the graphite fibers are dry and unsupported by the resin which has cured on the outside and between the cracks of the weaves. I’m surprised that the guy you know got it to work. I’m affraid though that the pieces that he made will not hold up over time.

I will look up a source for the Hysol for you.

Evan

Evan,

Thanks for the info, I guess that stuff is out of the question.

What are my other options, if any?

ACP has an EZ-LAM HT listed, and supposedly it’s pretty well up there in temp. I don’t remember the particulars of it, whether it needs higher temp post curing, etc. I think I remember it being amber… Try this link:

I noticed the Hysol is only rated to 375 F. I have also been looking for a 500 deg product. so far nothing.

I am sure some one makes it NASA makes space ship parts. So there is a high temp product somewhere.

I’m not so sure that a 500 degree working temp resin would be available in a room temp cure, that seems like a little too much to ask really… If you’re doing small parts, you might be able to make a hotbox and do the high temp cure yourself. It may be a gamble for quality though, depends on how much you can control the conditions really… I don’t mess with that stuff much…

OK I just surfed around and found this stuff.

Several sorces claim PEEK has the highest temp range.

I plan on making a intake manifold for a V8 engine, high temp and strength is important

I don’t follow, what is the pelletized PEEK going to help with…? Will you be dissolving it in something to use it as a wet layup resin?

This is a plastic used for injection molding.

That’s why I was confused, I thought we were talking thermosets…
I wish injection molding machines were affordable, there are so many things to make…

Just go to your local college that offers thermoplastic courses. That way you can use them for free… not that I’ve tried it or anything… :?
