So I’m trying to mold a part, and the bottom portion has me stumped. As you can see in the pictures, there are plastic dowels made of ABS that mounting screws attach to from the underside. My question, is whats the best way to recreate these on the underside of my part? Can I purchase generic plastic dowels that I can bond to my part? The OEM dowels are set at an angle, so just using standard nuts won’t work.
No one has any ideas?
yup, that what i would do , i wouldnt try to mould the webs in , id just take a mold of the face and make a ‘skin part’ , after id bond on attachment points
what is the part ?
It’s the bottom of a factory spoiler. I’m fine to bond the attachment points, but I’m stumped as to what to use as “attachment points”. I can’t use a nut, and am lost as to what else i could use. Wooden dowels wouldn’t work because my fear is that they will swell over time from moisture, and deteriate
I would use rivnuts.
If they are angled, measure the angle with a protractor or angle finder. Then use something easily shaped like foam core or epoxy putty to give you the angle you need but with a flat surface to bond the rivnut to. Lay some additional carbon reinforcement over the top to give the attachment point some strength.
Alternatively if you know a machinist or are good with a mill yourself, the best choice would be to use some aluminium or steel in the shape you need and tapped with the thread you need.
Or maybe make some sort of bond fixture and then bond in a nut of some sort? The difficultly is in making sure things are all aligned nicely. You could get click bond stuff… surely they make something for this application?
Why not mould the area that it mounts to and then you have a perfect replica of the bolt holes. Fix your T nuts to it then Adhere that to your top section and it’s done
That will end up thicker than the original part and won’t fit nicely.
This is a great idea, can’t believe I never thought of that lol… I agree normally it would be larger than the original part, but for how this mounts I think this will work perfectly. Thanks!
