help on mold. i'm skipping plug construction

Hey all,

I’m just about to finish my new original designed spoiler. and was thinking about my next project for my car. i chose this front bumper:

(link came from http://www.streetbeatcustoms.c…html)

it’s not available in the Philippines, hence i don’t have a plug (again). in my current project that i’m finishing, i didn’t bother to make a mold for the reason that i’m only making 1 spoiler wing, and that making a mold would double the working time. so, i went straight to making the plug as my final product.

during the plug creation, i had a hard time because everything didn’t not end up flat and smooth all over (which is not a surprise). as of the moment, i’m still body filling the whole thing up and sanding everything smooth. i don’t have grinder tools and just have a hand tool cutter and handy dandy sand papers. all’s taking such a long time to finish just for 1 spoiler. lol!

hence this is my dilemma: i want to make a mold as to ensure myself of a smoother fb bumper. BUT i don’t have a plug and don’t want to make one to shorten the working time.

the reasons for doing such a thing:

  1. i dont have a plug / copy of the bumper im making
  2. i dont want to create a plug
  3. if i make a plug, i’d rather make the plug the final thing.
  4. it takes longer to do a: plug -> mold -> finished product; and it’s more tedious
  5. using a mold ensures a smoother finished bumper (less bondo and sanding)
  6. i’m just making 1 bumper
  7. i’m crazy enough to try

gurus, any advice you can give me? do you think this is even a good idea? pls share.

it’s funny to think that i’m going to make a mold out of nothing. LOL!

Plug and mold of that thing will take 3 or more mold panels that will need to be bolted together with all those undercuts and such.

If you just want 1, then buy the 1. If there’s not 1 available for your car, buy one that is close to your car and modify it to fit!

yup! it’ll take about 3 molds. the sides would definitely need to be separated from the middle.

there isn’t an available part locally. and bumpers here are expensive. i’m saving money and at the same time i’m finding this glassing thing a good hobby. i also want to try this procedure… so if you guys were to do a process like this, how would do go about doing it?

thanks for the quick reply Werksberg

Try the search as we have cover this a few times…

Cut and rework the OEM, get PUR foam blocks and sculptor it…
