Help Me Out Guys!

I have a buddy that wants me to make some flat panel wood grain panels for his airplane.

He is worried about weight, so I need to be as precise as possible.

Im guessing I can make templates of the dash panels and make a thin piece of fiberglass plate, get some wood venier and stain it and then brush some surf resin on it, sand smooth and paint.

Does anyone at all have a better idea on how this is done? I really dont want to look like a jackass in front of this guy.

I cant seem to find anything on how the Simon wood dash parts are made or anything else like that.

So lets here some hiqh quality answers please and thank you!

Surely if you are going to paint the panels, there is no real need to use any sort of veneer?

But if you are looking for a veneer wood type effect, then I would imagine bonding the veneer to a thinnish marine ply backing, and then finishing with something like Duratec clear coat, would work just fine.

If you’ve got vacuum bagging or infusion equipment you can do it. Visit www.joewoodworker.com where you’ll find everything you need to add a nice “real” wood veneer to any sort of substrate. That site typically caters to cabinet makers etc. but the same principles apply. They make self adhesive veneers too that don’t require a vacuum press.
