I’m trying to understand Tg as it will relate to a project I have in mind.
I’m looking to build some components that are cosmetic bodywork for a motorcycle and then some that will require structural integrity.
My understanding as it relates to Tg are as follow, please correct or affirm as appropriate.
> The Tg of a resin will determine the temperature point/range where the physical charteristics(also chemical) will change as a result of kinetic energy introduced into the polymer structure of the cured resin.
> These changes as a result of having come up to the Tg will compromise the physical/structural properties that one may have wanted/designed for the component at hand. Which could lead to failure or lack of desired performance.
SO… if my above understanding and significance of Tg is correct, then a component that is strictly cosmetic such as a body panel may experience and go through the Tg without significant or any meaningful effects. Correct? Assuming that the body panel doesn’t turn into jelly and loose all shape analogously to the clocks in Salvador Dlai’s “the persistence of memory”
If the component is only for cosmetics then the only risk is potential print thru as incorporated strains are released by the fibers? correct?
If the component structural then Tg effects can be dire and lead to failure of components? correct?
Thanks for looking.
