Doesn’t anyone on this site infuse with VE resin? My last two message posts in which I inquired about which VE infusion resin composites central members are using have gone unanswered. I’m a newb and would like some advice/input from some more experienced members so I don’t have to learn from trial and error (ruined parts). I did some research and it looks like ORCA511 will satisfy my requirements. Have any composites central members used this stuff? If so, please tell me if you like/dislike it and why. Thanks!
It might work, although the thing I do not like is the fact that they do not give any clue on geltime. As it is pre-promoted it can be a pig to get a decent geltime out of it.
Also keep in mind that although you can cure most VE resins with normal MEKP, the best results are obtained with a special MEKP which is low on H2O2 levels, to prevent foaming.
I am terribly sorry for not responding on your request, I simply have no clue of what is available in your area.
I did some infusions with scott bader VE resin, don’t know wich one anymore, but a lot of problems with foaming, a lot of air trapped in the laminate.
Maybe because 90 percent of people on here that infuse regulary infuse with epoxy??
I wouldnt say anyone boycotted your thread as this is a top place with friendly advice
Thanks for the feedback guys… BTW: I actually WAS starting to wonder why my posts werent being answered… but…, I was half joking when I made that comment about being boycotted… I enjoy reading posts on this board because I’m trying to learn new composites techniques and there seems to be a wealth of knowledge here. I am surprised there isnt much experience with VE resin infusion though (I realize epoxy is the most popular resin for infusion).
There is more UP and VE infused than epoxy. But more in an industrial setting.
Susho: If you ever come across VE again, check the type of peroxide. Many do foam, some don’t. Read chapter 10 of my catalogue.
I don’t hope so Herman, I quite like prepregs
(but who knows, if someone else pays more, I would be happy to switch to infusion again, haha)
Infusion with VE or PE is used in boatbuilding quite a lot. Here in europe the rules regarding styrene are getting tighter, and using “new” techniques like infusion are subsidized. Those are stimulations to switch to infusion. A good pump with exhaust filters get rid of styrene flying around, set up costs are paid with subsidy, while the products get to a higher quality standard, when done well somewhat cheaper too.
