Helmet visor mould

This is my recent project Im working on. Mould is made from epoxy/fiberglass. I used my standard epoxy and added black pigment. I will post more pictures after sanding/buffing. Visor will be made by infusion.

Looking good so far! What is that flange material made of?

I made it from card stock (,heavy weight paper,). I bond two layers with Super77. Paper is then covered with tape. Then I cut shapes from it…

Mike… after you try infusing one, IF it does have much trapped air… go to a wet lay up/vacuum bag method.

Looks like a cool project and nice mold.

I hate wet layup. I will not make it that way. Infusion will work. I made several infusions of almost same visor and its possible to make it with perfect flow media…

Look at those old junk visors (lot of air pockets)… They were made in old mould and without any low media (bad move). I now have enkafusion and its heaven (I made several test infusions)… Im very interested how will everything work with new mould and enkafusion.

I suggest to use green or red or yellow gel coat. When the mold is ready and you start the progress for carbon fiber part, sometime some fabric thread drop in the mold and you can’t see it.

I dont use any gelcoat. After part is cured, light sand, than polyurethane clear coat.

As sharp as some of those fins are …I’m wondering if a Caul plate (silicone)would help you get the CF to hold down better during Vac ?

Are you positive your pressing the cloth deep enough into the fins to begin with ?

I would still think you’d at least use a clear gelcoat to help in the process too ?

Its possible to to hold CF in sharp places just with bag. Of course you are not able to make perfect angle. There is a little radius filled with epoxy after infusion. You just need to play with it a lot with partial vacuum. Those visors on pictures are full of bridging areas. I also add lot of roving into the deep fins (left visor on picture). I will send pictures of final visor from new mould when it will be ready.

I was thinking of silicone reusable bag to save time and money…

What kind of tape is that? To me it looks like masking tape?

No its transparent plastic tape with shiny surface.

He means the mould and to make it from a colour which you will never make a part from - green, orange, etc, so when your (black) part is in the mould you can see easily if there are any problems because of its bright background colour.

Aaaaa thanks for explanation  I will probably buy different color pigment for moul making.
