Hello from the Mitten State!

Hello CC boards!

I’m Andy, a Mechanical Engineer from Michigan. I’ve been lurking here a little bit and I must say I’m quite impressed with the level of expertise and the great projects on this board. I’ve been playing around with composites since about 2008 making some bicycle parts, but now I’m making UAV parts and race car parts. I’m having a blast and hoping to notch out a side business to help pay for my college loans!

With in the next year or so I hope to debut my very own kit vehicle. Unfortunately, I’m working 60 hours a week right now so composite work is usually late at night and on Sunday’s.

Here is a few of my projects so far. Let me know if you have any questions or comments!

Thanks,
Andy,

Welcome to the forums although judging from your parts it looks like you don’t need help here! Great work!

Welcome aboard Andy.

Trust me, I need plenty of help. Just ask my fiance!

If you don’t mind me asking, what company/what line of work are you in? I too majored in Mechanical Engineering and am curious.

Hello Canyon, I work for a small defense company in Michigan. Our corporation does a lot of large scale machining and fabrication. I’m a design engineer, I use 3D modeling to design different “systems” for tanks and vehicles that I can’t tell you about. Fun stuff!

THanks,
Andy,

Welcome to the forums Andy. Looks like you’ve got a good handle on things there, nice looking parts!

On the last photo (guessing a vent of some kind?) did you end up cutting holes? Just wondering how you went about that to get a nice even shape on all of them?

The last photo is a vent and yes we ended up cutting holes in them. They are fender vents I believe for a GT1 Mustang. I am only making spares for a few people right now. I plan on improving the design of them in the near future. They are a little difficult to lay up and the “scrap” rate is somewhat high.

Thanks,
Andy,
