Hello from Southern Cal

Hello to Everyone,
I’ve been hanging about the forums for several weeks and failed to make an introduction, so here we are.
I am retired now from the 9 to 5 rat race. The kids are grown and gone. Time is abundant and resources are generous enough. I grew up in my father’s workshop and of course have one of my own.
I have been a member of Radio Control Model Yachting for 25 years. The sport has evolved along with technology. I have several model boat designs now that I am ready to make into reality. I wish to have my designs put into a form that will allow for CNC created plugs and molds. I also wish to make the hulls, decks and keels, through the infusion method. I have used epoxy resins for boat construction for decades, and done wet lay-up for hulls in the past, but that just won’t do these days. Lighter, stronger and cleaner is the order of the day.

This seems like the right place to be for questions and answers, since many of you are actually earning a living from resins, composite materials and industry related items.

Anyway, the adventure begins here.

Cheers,
H. David Richard

Welcome AllThumbs!
What size boats do you have and want to build? An old boss of mine build R/C battleships that had air powered guns and went to events were they try to sink each others boat. I come from a background in R/C Helicopter for a hobby.

Hi thanks for the reply Rotorage. I have seen some of the same type of ships out here in California that your old boss was involved in. Never tried those helicopters. They seem like a challenge. We all have our own definition of fun.

My yachts are Sail boats, racing sailboats. The designs I have involve the US 1-meter class. A development class of approx. 1 meter in length.
I sail a variety of classes, but have only just reintroduced myself to the racing after a hiatus of several years. I do have a box full of old trophys hiding somewhere in storage. Been off-roading with a different circle of friends for quite some time.
If you are interested at all you can find out more about what I like and do at this website. http://www.theamya.org/
It may seem a little dry, but I think its just because the website could use an update and the presentations of the boats and classes could be improved as well. The meat of it all are the clubs that we have coast to coast and quite a membership of support.
Thanks again for the interest.

Welcome! Almost sounds like a second career.

Cheers,
Kevin

Thanks Kevin,
Back in the day, there were several successful designer-builders that I could not compete with for various reasons. Today, I can. I have the whole package now and its time to make it a reality. If I am successful, then yeah I will sell some boats as well.
This guy is a master builder and I like many of his techniques. http://www.ddesprois-rc-boats.com/BuildingGambitFinal.pdf. I haven’t asked him, but his hull looks very much like a modified “Mistral” hull designed by Bob Debow.
The PDF shows very well the involvement of CF and Epoxy Resins in RC Sailboating.
