Does anyone know how to measure styrene emissions? I’m to understand if I emit more than 10 tons I need a permit. 10 tons sounds like a lot. How many gallons of resin does it take to emit 10 tons? If it’s all infused, does that filter my emission? Thanks
I don’t remember the actual numbers but I think we were running a bit over 100,000 lbs of resin per year and still under the threshhold. The formula was pretty complex and it takes many things into consideration. We hired an environmental engineer to do all the work so I can’t tell you all the ins and outs. Regardless, you are supposed to have a permit if you are using any amount of VOCs and HAPs. Under ten tons possible emissions qualifies you for a small quantity generator permit - easy to get, at least in Florida.
Closed molding will mitigate your emissions numbers. Almost all of the styrene is contained within the bag and crosslinks into the matrix rather than evaporating from the surface.
If you use infusion the styrene goes into the pump oil, which is a hazardous waste and should be disposed of properly.
