Anyone know if H.F. sells an hvlp gun with a 2.0 or 2.2 tip? I just want a cheap gun for tooling gel coat.
I’m just gonna look on ebay. lol. I can pick one up on there for $25.
yeah thats the better idea. I wrote a tutorial about drilling the tips out of the harbor guns but in the end it wasnt worth it.
If you are looking to do work using CF, then a cup gun is going to be more suitable.
Parts made with CFM or moulds and plugs dont really require spray application of gel-coats, and brush application will work fine.
I thought was wondering about that ClassicBike. I think i will just brush it on for now. Is it difficult to sand the brush lines from the mold? Or will gel coat flow out good enough with a brush?
I wonder why exactly you would want to sand brushed gel-coat flat?
If you are making something like a cosmetic carbon part, where the laminate shows through a clear surface layer, then spray application of something like Duratec clear would be a good idea.
However before getting involved with carbon/epoxy and RTM process, having the ability to hand laminate good quality CFM parts using poly resin system, would be something that you might find very helpful.
I just picked up 5 hlpv Texture Paint guns at Harbor Freight for $10 each. (yay clearance sale) They came with 3 different size tips and work great for gel coat. As long as you don’t care about consistant coverage. I had to add a shut-off valve and regulator. 110psi was a little much.
I didn’t clean out the first one fast enough and it’s now soaking in Laquer thinner. But, for $10 who cares.
Acetone is better that lac. thinner to remove PER.
