I have a product that I want to manufacture using FRP. What kind of interference should I expect from the government.
hi, i believe government shouldnt have any problem with frp, but may be ur local environment agency will enquire about the waste disposal of ur production and also the smell/fire hazard issues of the resins u may use depending on the location of your workshop.
I think your biggest issues will be dealing with flammable materials and VOC release.
The flammables issues will probably be dealt with on a local level. IE local fire marshal.
The VOC release is usually a state regulation. Usually there is a threshold for quantity released per year.
This will apply mostly to polyester and vinylester products. Epoxy is usually better for VOC release and flammability.
What area is your product in? What your product is for is what will decide which regulations you’ll have to follow. If it’s aerospace it’s a lot different than if it’s sports. I think the bigger thing is to have a well designed product that does what it’s supposed to and lasts. Other wise you’ll be answering to customers or possibly lawyers.
As far as the government goes, they’ll mostly be concerned that you pay your taxes. Local government will care about how safe your shop is and that you dispose of waste properly as well as don’t pollute more than is allowed. They’re not anti composites.
the product is a shower stall and it will be made using “wet layup” method.
For home there may be regulations on which materials are allowable inside of the home. I would think mostly about FR ratings and if the materials will continue to off gas VOCs.
