Good epoxy

Hey guys,
I want to buy an epoxy that can handle high end use temperatures to like 250 - 300F and have a room temp cure. I would also like to keep the cost below $85 a mixed gallon if possible. The cured epoxy needs to not be blue, gray, orange, or yellow tint once cured on the laminate - need clear other wise my customers will complain if they see a hint of color. It also needs to remain hard/stiff when the cured part is heated up to 200-250F. Also this is for infusion and needs to be 600cps or less.

I know, lots of demands from an epoxy :o

I emailed Northern Fiberglass Sales to see what they think would be the best Huntsman resin & hardener to use for the job.

Is Huntsman expensive? how much for their infusion resin cost?

All of Huntsmans products are as high quality as you can get. Dont expect them to be cheap. A lot of car manufacturers use there tooling boards for prototyping new models.

Plan on spending about $1,000 for the 10 gallon kit. They don’t sell in smaller quantities.

Freemansupply sells 6 gallon kits (5 epoxy 1 hardner), look under the RenInfusion Resins.

Wow, yeah $1000 or even $300 is out of my budget for now. Plus i just want to test one gallon before i go buying more volume.

Actually $100 a gallon ain’t bad for good premium epoxy. I just have to find a seller that has one gallon with hardener or even half gallon + hardener.

Call Carl Bergstrom at White Pine Lumber 708-846-0300, they’re my Huntsman product dealer. They might get you a smaller sample or something. The 8601 is just under $300 for 5 galls.

youll have a hard time finding a epoxy system with a Tg that high without needing a post cure, I personally have never seen a epoxy that high from just room temp. you can buy huntsman resin from northern for about ~$500 for a 5 gallon system with 1 gallon hardener which is about $85/gallon, but i know all the huntsman hightemp epoxies require a post cure for the higher Tg systems

Hojo, how about a renfusion epoxy that has a TG of 225 to 250F ?

the 8604 is the last of the infusion resin that will cure room temp. the 8605 is probally what you would want. Heres the data sheet off northern fiberglass’s site: http://www.nfgsales.com/files/active/0/RENINFUSION%208605-Ren%208605.pdf . It requires a post cure, if you didnt post cure it , it would probally take atleasat a month to fully cure

How about 8604, what is the TG? For now I don’t have an oven for post cure.

the 8604 system is a nice, good cosmetics tough resin infusion system, but the Tg is only 164F, the 8605 Tg is 307F but requires that post cure. your going to have a hard time finding what you want without a post cure. I have never seen a epoxy resin system with a Tg over 200F that didnt require a post cure. you may be able to find a vinylester with a high Tg that your looking for without requiring a post cure

Correction my friend … reninfusion 8604 has a TG of 176 if using the infusion process  All the other numbers for this epoxy is off the chart, good stuff.

I bet my epoxy has a TG of 110 haha. That sucks because i like the epoxy i use … only problem is the tg and being 600cps it infuses more slowly than i would like.

I’m gonna check out what the post cure procedure is for the RenInfusion 8605. If it’s under 150F i may use it if i can build a tent oven.

Most of the time the post cure temperature is higher than the TG value. So 300F tg means the post cure temp will more than likely be higher than 300F.

http://www.nfgsales.com/partners/huntsman_advanced_materials/infusion_resins , this is all the reninfusion data sheets, the 8604 Tg is 164F, the 8605 will require a post cure of atleast 300F. you should just consider building a small oven. you could build one for pretty cheap if you do it your self
