Gelcoat color, your preferences.

Just wondering what your preferences are reqarding the color of you molds and why. I like to use black for the fact that you can see imperfections easily however I also like to use white because you can see the when pva is coated evenly. I ran out of both the other day and decided to use a clear with blue and red pigment which made a muddy brown color. I found it easier to see both the imperfections and the pva.

I like black for the very same reasons. I pretty much dont use anything else. I do not use PVA so white wouldnt do me any good.

Evan

I use only black for my molds also for the same reasons and I use white for my masters and patterns.

what do you mean by masters and patterns?

I think Joe is referring to plugs. Master is the first part that you make off of the mold. This is often used as a backup plug in case you ruin your mold and need to make another one fast. Ideally you should always make a master and store it away for those rainy days. This is pretty old school because I most people I know dont make masters. Im pretty guilty of it myself.

btw, I now sell black tooling gel coat and tooling resin. This is polyester based. Soon I will carry the high tem epoxy tooling gel coat. Its good stuff.
